But, people, Dan Rather isn’t retiring until March. Didn’t we know even before the CBS’ intrepid investigators departed on their fearless inquiry into the dastardly events of that day that he was retiring this spring? It’s not like he is being shoved off that chair on anyone else’s schedule but his own. And he is 73 years old. Not exactly early retirement. Anyway.

Oh, and besides, 60 Minutes II is where the deed was done, and he’s not getting kicked off of that. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for journalistic honesty and transparency, imho.

Update:

I was beginning to doubt myself all through the news today, because everyone was debating how much rathergate influenced his retirement, and I thought, did I imagine hearing he was retiring over the summer?

BUT! Vindication!!

The Spoons Experience says the following:

Uhhhh, guys. It was already widely known that Rather would be leaving the anchor chair sometime after the elections long before Rathergate ever happened. Hell, he’s not even retiring completely — he’ll still be a CBS correspondent.

There’s simply no way to spin Rather’s “retirement” as any sort of disciplinary action against Rather. In fact, CBS’s announcement, and the accompanying hagiography, is a final endorsement of Rather and his legacy by the network.

See? Seeeee?!
