USS San Francisco
I’ll leave the San Francisco jokes out of it, though I’m ashamed to say several jumped to mind a few days ago when this all happened.
Anyway, Bubblehead’s been blogging nothing else for the past few days, and there’s an entry with pictures, and a lot of interesting information, in general.
Submarines fascinate people. Why do you think Das Boot and U-571 were made, and the only other Navy-themed movie in recent times that comes to mind was the questionably good but absolutely entertaining Under Siege?
Anyway, you’re not likely to hear much about them (submarines) unless, tragically, something like this happens, making them look like fools in the press.
Just the title of this entry makes me want to cry:
Anyway.. I just thought I’d mention it.

Thanks for the comments. “Sailor, rest your oar…” is a common refrain in naval funerals. For me, though, the absolute most powerful, gut-wrenching memorial tradition belongs to the Army, when a soldier is lost in combat. For the memorial, the lost soldier’s unit lines up in ranks, and they do a roll call. All soldiers answer “Present”, until they get to the name of the lost soldier. The silence after his name is called is among the most poignant moments I’ve ever witnessed…
