Arthur Chrenkoff has some great commenters today.
Chrenkoff – Dean gets religion
“[Dean] remarked that Republicans never brought up the scriptural verse saying it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.” All along we thought that the whole “tax the rich” thing was motivated by envy and resentment, but now we know that the Dems simply do so that as many people as possible can enter the Kingdom of Heaven. How charitable of them.
A few comments:
I get the feeling Dean’s a lot richer than I am. Make of that what you will.
ninme | Homepage | 03.23.05 – 9:41 pm | #
For what it’s worth, Mr. Dean’s net worth is something like $4M. His daddy was a big shot on Wall St. and he (Howard) inherited his wealth. He’s a symptom of an incredible disease in Vermont, of “trust fund gentry” who moved here with inherited money, don’t work, and cause endless trouble.
Dan | 03.23.05 – 10:00 pm | #
Does Dean realize that the ‘eye of the needle’ to which he refers is actually a gate to a city? Camels had to ‘duck down’ to get through it. The expression was not meant to refer to a sewing needle. Dean really doesn’t know his scripture. Figures!!!!
DixieDarlin’ | 03.23.05 – 11:28 pm | #
“it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.”
This quote was used by the Spanish friars to loot the Filipinos of their wealth and is currently being used by the Catholic Church in the Philippines to guilt everyone to pay their taxes, which is kind of hypocritical for an institution that has unknown amounts of land and assets.
I grew up hearing that quote bandied around like that Golden Rule that I have come to loathe any politician who even utters it.
I apologize for the off topic nature. It seems that Howard Dean has copied the workings of the Spanish friars. cdensing | 03.23.05 – 11:42 pm | #
I especially like that last one. All these fascinating little tidbits of information working there way from all around the globe to an Australian blog on American politics. It’s a brave new world.
