Everyone wants Dick Durbin to apologize. But I think that’ll be about as effective as Newsweek retracting the story after a negative reaction from the government. Those overseas who are inclined to believe the article will only see it looking even worse after the retraction.

I think that’s useless (Dick Durbin knows what he said and what it means) and apologizing will just make it worse. I think he needs to resign, and I think everyone who does this crap needs to get their butts off Capitol Hill. It’s not just “feeding anti-Americanism abroad,” it’s breeding anti-Americanism abroad. We might be hated because we’re a super power, but we’re also respected because we’re a super power, and when a Big Important United States Government Official says that the US soldiers are doing the sort of thing that Nazis and Pol Pot and Stalin would do, people are going to believe him, because they don’t understand that he’s just as bad a political hack as any two-bit garbage collector in Baghdad.

And just like a Romanian friend told me once about when she got taken into a police station for shoplifting when she was fourteen, just a couple months after moving to this country: She was scared out of her wits because she “just came from a communist country,” and didn’t think she’d ever see her mother again, the people who lived with this sort of thing won’t be quite as blasé, quite as willing to wave it away as “just politics” like everyone in the MSM has been. It’s not only horrible to us and to the military but it’s cruel to the people we invaded in an attempt to help them. Making them fear us is undoing everything we’ve done so far.

Those poor people have been scarred for generations, and the party that is supposedly so much better at helping abused women and battered puppies seems to thrive on frightening people who’ve suffered ten times worse kinds of terror.
