PDN – Reuters Explains Photo Of Bush Bathroom Note

Once he saw what it said, Hershorn decided the note was interesting and worth publishing. The white parts of the picture were overexposed, so a Reuters processor used Photoshop to burn down the note. This is a standard practice for news photos, Hershorn says, and the picture was not manipulated in any other way.

His headline:

REUTERS has acknowledged Bush ‘Potty Note’ photo was enhanced via Photoshop…

Does he think that everyone stands around under the red safelights in the back corner closet of smokey newsrooms doing their burning and dodging under the clunky old-fashioned enlarger lenses, as the chemical fumes insinuate themselves into their DNA?

Update:

I blame the pharmaceutical companies. We’re obviously in the midst of a pandemic. LGF linked to this guy (who seriously needs to right-click his text fields and turn on spell-check):

War Photoblog – Reuters manipulates news photo

As can be seen in the picture below, the area of the photo containing the paper has had its contrast heavily boosted; the histogram, analyzing the area enclosed by the dashed line, shows that most pixels have been pushed to either white (the peak on the right side of the graph) or black (the peak on the left side of the graph). There are almost no pixels that have an intermediate brightness; all smooth gradations of brightness are gone.

…Etc. And this is what I said in his comments:

Dude, it’s in bad taste, it’s stupid, and it’s not newsworthy, but you can mess with contrast perfectly easily in normal darkroom conditions with a normal enlarger and a red filter. Therefore, despite how much we might not like (to put it mildly) Reuters, it doesn’t violate anything. Honestly: pick another battle.
