Times Online – All change as Sarkozy takes over French presidency
The rightwinger Nicolas Sarkozy vowed to press ahead “scrupulously” with his reform programme and help France adapt to the demands of global change today as he took over the French presidency from Jacques Chirac.
In a symbolic handover of powers, Mr Chirac passed on the launch codes to France’s nuclear arsenal and briefed his young successor on current agenda items before being driven away from the Elysee Palace as President for the final time after 12 years in residence.
Then a 21-gun salute rang out from the esplanade of the Invalides across the river Seine as the official results of Mr Sarkozy’s election victory were read out to an audience of invited guests in the palace’s ornate main reception hall.
