Mr McS
Frequent commenter and founding ninmate Brett McS’s dad died a couple weeks ago. Like my grandmother, he had Alzheimer’s disease, and it was nice knowing someone else who was going through the same thing, so I was really sad to hear that he’d passed. Brett McS found some old photographs and things about his dad’s experiences in the war, and I offered my blog as a place he could publish them, but he decided to create a new blog with its own entry devoted to this story, and it’s up now. It’s a really incredible and beautiful story, so I’d like everyone to go over there and, of course, read the whole thing.

Dear Brett I’m very sorry to hear of your father’s death. Mine died nine years ago (on my wedding anniversary!) and I just felt so desolate. In my experience you don’t ever “get over” it, but you do find better ways of coping over time. Like ninme and her family, you and your family are very much in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks, Red. It’s probably that we don’t really want to get over it. It will always be a sad thing, and should be that way. I am focussing on supporting Mum of course. She read the story just today on my sister’s computer and was very pleased with it.
I saw recently that a heroine of the Royal Escaping Society (my Dad was in the Australian branch) Andree de Jongh died a few days ago. Hers is an awesome story.

(…the heck is MI9?)
I’d like to think there are still people like that willing to do things like that for us English speakers when the proverbial Revolution comes.

I am sadden by your loss Brett. The blog makes a pretty fine memorial.

Thanks, Half. It is also aimed at providing a context for all the letters and papers and photos. No one in the family had the whole story – each had heard bits and pieces – so it was good to put it all together.
