Christmas is Coming and Suicide is in the Air!
Ahh, the holidays. Ordinarily I’d be full of anti-multiculturalist diatribes fighting for common sense about Christmas, but this year there’s just been that stupid thing of Amazon’s Twelve Days of Holidays (morons). This year though, they’ve skipped all that, which leaves all sorts of room for the holiday rush of statistics:
First from a “Doctor Bob” (he lives around here, which probably explains the nom de blog): Assisted Suicide: Coming To A State Near You. I won’t quote it, since I’d have to quote the whole thing, so read the whole thing.
Next, some guy is actually going to kill himself on British television tonight:
Telegraph – Assisted suicide documentary is indefensible
The broadcast of Craig Ewart’s assisted suicide is is not ground-breaking, writes George Pitcher, it’s in the same category as live web suicides.
Which, thirdly and fourthly, lead us to a couple general comments on the subject which agree generally with what I’ve always thought. Vanderleun:
I’ve known a few suicides, but none of them ever seemed to require “assistance” once their minds were made up.
And Dr Bob again, responding to a commenter:
You are, of course, perfectly free to end your own life, with or without such legislation. A handgun and a single bullet will do the job very nicely — along with a hundred other ways.
The problem with this public policy is that you are asking your physician to kill you — and therefore it is no longer just about “what you do with your body”, but very much involves other people — the doctor, the families, and society as a whole.
