Announced he has throat cancer today and has to cut short his book tour to have chemo on his esophagus. But anyway, the news had a link to this review of his memoirs* (which he was on tour promoting), leading with:

In 1973, at the age of 24, Christopher Hitchens was called to Athens, where his mother had committed suicide: she had left his father for a defrocked priest whose promise of love turned to destruction. Her adored son had to deal with the outcome. Police had found her telephone off the hook. Hotel records showed repeated attempts to call his London number. They never got through.

Isn’t that awful? And given all his railing against religion, no one ever thought to include that as a wee asterisk?
